Currently in a pickle. Could use some help!
Long story short, I've interviewed at a boutique firm for an internship and the MD loved me. Gave me a 'verbal offer' and basically said "I'll do everything I can to make sure you get this". So naturally I was happy and considered it sealed.
I sent him a thank you email afterwards, and told him I look forward to working with him and he replied back saying it was nice meeting me. Now he mentioned during the interview that he was travelling in a few days, so I sent him another email on Friday (in retrospect this was probably not so smart) wishing him safe travels, and if there was anything I should do to prepare for my role that starts in a few months.
I haven't gotten an answer from him since Friday, and naturally the little bitch in me is getting worried (because traditionally he replies quite quickly). Now he could already be overseas, or he might have other shit on his mind apart from me, but that's not where the problem ends, or even starts.
You see, a few months back I had an interview with a boutique corp advisory shop. They do mainly credit lending to SMEs, but they advise in M&A, cap raises etc. I never got a reply back from them after the interview until fucking now, with the MD's secretary emailing asking me for my availability to do the internship.
So this is where my problem is. I can't take both at the same time, because I'm already doing a VC internship. I would very much rather prefer the boutique IB over the other one, mainly because I got along with the MD rather well and their deal flow is solid. I don't particularly want to do the other place mainly because of the lack of respect I was dealt in their speed to get back to me. They kept delaying their offer to me over the past few months and made up bullshit excuses (busy, travelling etc) and I know for a fact that's all bullcrap.
What do I do now? I cant email the IB again, and certainly can't call them (I could but I don't wanna sound needy or desperate, especially since I haven't got a reply back to my email). I don't want to be stuck in a position where I reject the corp advisory offer, and then later down the road get told by the IB "sorry", especially since the offer was verbal and not written.
Sorry I'm rambling, but that's the state of my mind at the moment. Any advice or insight is highly appreciated.
I'm not one to get into the bullshit of boutique or bulge or pretend like I fucking know anything about the situation you are going through. I'm sure there are 100 different details you weened out of this one to post it that are pro/con ping-ponging inside your head. But my one piece of advice is to fucking breath. This is your career man. Do what makes you happy. Try to keep your word on shit like this, but at the end of the day, What the fuck do you want? Cause right now you are coming from a reactive state and panicking and shitting yourself (at 1 am it looks like). 1) you already have one internship with a VC firm, it's not like you have nothing. so I'd be willing to role the dice if you want the IB and fuck the corp advisory.
Not a nuclear arms race and sure your decision now will ripple out to those later butterfly effect style, but always fuck with the dick you got not the one you wish you had. Is a risk if you turn down the corporate advisory job that the IB will fall through, and you won't get it, sure? But you have respectable words to fill the resume timeline, and you may even benefit more by throwing everything you have at the VC internship rather than splitting your time to try two different demanding ass jobs at the same time. If you want the IB hold out for them. and let them know this side piece is calling you but they are your main woman.
Also- and I know fuck all about Investment Banking boutiques- but call the HR department before you give the corp advisory the bad news. If he gave you the "verbal offer" maybe HR is just taking their sweet ass time memorializing it, or maybe he is flaking on you. Let them know the verbal offer came out from this guy and ask if they know anything about it, they may just tell you it's number 5 on their to do list. and you should get the written communication soon, or they may say " what are you fucking talking about?" then you can find where the leak in the pipe is. and you don't have to seem like a nagging insecure bitch by going back to the MD and riding his ass.
Tell the corp adv. fuckers you let them know in a few weeks time.
