Dealing with Competition

Hi all, need some advice but currently a sophomore and working at a boutique firm. Have already secured a SA 2026. From a non-target school.

How do you guys deal with competition and feeling that you're competing against other analysts? I'm working with a friend right now and I don't like that I'm feeling like he's my competition cause it's making me overthink on all the little things like what deals he's getting placed on and what work he's receiving and comparing everything to me.

Looking for advice right now so I can understand how to better manage my emotions and thoughts going forward. It makes me a little nervous of myself that I'm already feeling like this in a boutique firm when I haven't even stepped into the SA 2026 role yet.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can manage competition and the emotions that come with it:

  1. Focus on Your Own Growth: Comparing yourself to others, especially friends or colleagues, can be counterproductive. Instead, channel that energy into improving your own skills and performance. Remember, the real competition is with yourself—how you can leverage your strengths and improve your weaknesses to achieve your goals.

  2. Collaborate, Don’t Compete: In the early stages of your career, building a reputation as a team player is crucial. As highlighted in WSO threads, being a good squad member and supporting your peers can make you stand out. Helping others succeed often leads to mutual respect and stronger relationships, which can benefit you in the long run.

  3. Shift Your Perspective: Feeling competitive is natural, but it’s important to reframe it. Instead of seeing your friend as competition, view them as a partner in your journey. Celebrate each other’s successes and learn from one another. This mindset can reduce stress and foster a healthier work environment.

  4. Avoid Overthinking: Overanalyzing every detail, like deal placements or work assignments, can lead to unnecessary stress. Trust that your efforts and performance will speak for themselves. Focus on delivering high-quality work and building strong relationships with your team.

  5. Seek Mentorship: If you’re struggling with these feelings, consider seeking advice from a mentor or someone more experienced in the industry. They can provide perspective and guidance on how to navigate these emotions effectively.

  6. Remember the Bigger Picture: As one WSO contributor wisely noted, the walls aren’t closing in on you. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Securing an SA 2026 role is already a significant achievement, especially coming from a non-target school. Keep your eyes on your long-term goals and trust the process.

By focusing on collaboration, self-improvement, and maintaining a positive mindset, you can better manage these feelings and set yourself up for success in your SA role and beyond.
