I had been looking to get back into IB at the analyst level (left during my second year for corporate after working at a sweatshop but wanting to go back longer-term in another group). Kinda stopped looking now as the lateral market for analysts seems pretty dead. I'm seeing associate+ roles popping up but given layoffs / hiring freezes, it looks like a particularly tough time to lateral especially for analysts.
Why do you think analysts are more impacted by hiring freezes than Associates and up? Not challenging what you’re finding, just curious.
Not sure and not something I would've assumed otherwise, just feels that way given the openings I'm seeing on bank websites and Linkedin. Maybe there's more demand for associates+ to lateral as there are less of them and good ones with rep at a firm are more hesitant to move than a first / second year analyst that might just want a pedigree bump before hopping to buyside. Complete guess though
I think that's pretty right, analysts viewed as necessary during busy times but little guarantee they stick around, vs. associates, so when things pick up in who knows how long will still have a need. Banks always seem eager to add associates, possibly bc shortage, possibly in part bc of reason just mentioned.
Won't say which MM HC group but I do think hiring freezes are happening. Slower deal flow at this time vs. last year when I know they recruited at least 1 summer associate. Their application hinted they had 2 summer associate positions available and now I'm starting to think they may have 0 or 1 at this point.
But in terms of laterals, yeah associates / VPs are plentiful. Firm above has a few spots open FT.
What are the biggest focuses on in the lateral process? I imagine they all have technical / cases - how did you guys prepare for those? I have several deals on my resume too that I can talk extensively about but imagine a model case is still different to prep for.
yh bump on the point on the model cases
I went through a number of lateral processes and never got a modeling test. It’s still the same ol 400 question guide type questions for technicals. And showcasing your responsibilities on deals is much more important than walking depreciation through the financial statements. I bombed my technicals and massively upgraded shops due to my exp
Do you mind sharing how you talked about your deal experience in interviews? I imagine you covered deal rationale, valuation, metrics, role on deal, etc. If you had a structured way of delivering this, please share (if you dont mind)
Don't mean this in an offensive way - but was this during the hiring craze a year or so ago? I feel like I've heard about modeling cases a lot during other times but also heard during the post-COVID hiring wave there was a lot lower standards to get more bodies.
yh also looking to lateral - currently in a top ranked team at a boutique where the other teams are dogshit. Aiming to switch sectors to a coverage team like consumer / industrials and currently not seeing shit on the lateral market - only associate roles. probably waiting for bonuses to be paid before people start moving around...
Does anyone have any advice with lateralling into different banks / sector teams?
but yh, looking to be made associate before moving so hoping for a lateral to a BB / better overall name shop before a buyside move...
Adding to the above thoughts…how have people found these opportunities? is it really just cold calling on linkedin?
