Delay Graduation For IB?

Hey y’all, I’m a junior at a target studying finance w w 3.8+ and I signed a 2024 buy side of offer at a decently well known firm but middle market still. I tried recruiting ib and had supers at a couple ebs/bbsbut no offers. I really do want ib as I know optionality out of ug is extremely important but I think I’d have a really hard time recruiting ft given others will have ibexp. Is it worth delaying grad to re recruit for SA 2025 and will banks even be willing to give me another chance? Should I avoid anyone I chatted last year? I would really appreciate any advice!

Hey there! Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're in a bit of a pickle. But don't worry, I've seen this situation before.

Firstly, it's great that you have a buy-side offer at a well-known firm. That's no small feat! However, I understand your concern about wanting to break into investment banking (IB) for the optionality it provides.

Delaying graduation to re-recruit for a Summer Analyst (SA) position in 2025 is a strategy some people consider. It would give you another shot at the IB recruiting cycle, and more time to prepare and network. Plus, you'd have the added advantage of your current internship experience.

However, there are a few things to consider. One, delaying graduation can be costly, both in terms of tuition and the opportunity cost of entering the workforce later. Two, there's no guarantee you'll secure an IB position, even with the extra time.

As for whether banks will give you another chance, it's hard to say. Some might appreciate your persistence and the additional experience you've gained, while others might question why you didn't secure an IB role in your first go-around.

Regarding the people you chatted with last year, it's generally a good idea to maintain those relationships. They could provide valuable advice and potentially even referrals. Just be honest about your situation and your goals.

In the end, it's a personal decision that depends on your specific circumstances and how strongly you feel about breaking into IB. Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all answer here. Good luck!
