As you may already know from my other 1,000,000 posts, I am currently a college freshman, and I am on the verge of securing an internship, so I'm FUCKING HAPPY!
However, the firm wants to know what is my desired salary. Should I put zero, since I have no prior experience in finance? If not, then what should I put?

Yeah market works or just put "To be discussed". Thats what I usually did.
"Market or TBD" is fine. Usually for internships they know what they will pay you anyways.
Ask around, get an idea of what they have paid in the past. Or put the Market.
Can't go wrong with market
always try glassdoor.com to get an idea if you have no basis at all for salary, its pretty helpful and is a good starting point.

I'm a newbie to summer internships. I had no idea if they set pay scale for all interns. However, whenever I applied for any summer internship, it asked for "desired salary". To make sure my wage was not "outstanding", I simply found the average intern rate from Glassdoor.
This being said, does it hurt my application if I have accidentally asked for more then their rate? Or will I get the opportunity to be accepted and negotiate the value? Or does it in anyway affect my application chances? Thanks in advance guys!
fucking lol you're not actually supposed to give a number dude you're supposed to simply say "any amount would be fine as i really just value the learning opportunity" would not be surprised if you didn't get an offer

Assuming this is for a bank, or some other large firm that has structured internship programs, there is zero negotiation for interns -- they pay you what they pay you.

I usually put the range of the salary I would expect to receive given the position and my experience. But that's just me.

Have you guys come across any applications that have a section which asks you what you'd like your compensation to be?
I applied to two elite boutique IMD firms last night and both of the applications asked me to put what I would like for a salary/hourly wage. I put $0 for both since it wouldn't accept "negotiable" or something like that, but I was wondering if anyone has come across something like this.
Is there a specific thing these firms are looking to see in this answer? Keep in mind these were both for SA roles.
Don't answer it until you absolutely have to. That's my take. Better to let them put out a bid first.
