Did not receive BB SA 2022 Return Offer - Don't study Finance, too young...
Hi everyone, just thought I would make a post here as really want some genuine advice.
I'm 20 years old and interned in a top BB this summer, won't disclose the name as this post might give away a lot to people that know me.
Basically, I didn't receive a Return Offer for FT - of course I had positive feedback in the Review with things such as Cultural Fit and Personality and Work Ethic etc, and things to improve on.
However, the reason why I didn't receive an FT Offer was because of "business needs". I speak English and two non-European languages, but the team had more Interns than FT spaces and the FT spaces went to two interns who speak the useful European languages and who both study Masters in Finance.
I was just told that it was a competitive environment and whilst they understand that I don't study Finance but still made an effort to learn the Technicals and do well in the work that I did, "business needs" basically mean they prefer people who they would have to teach less to.
Which makes sense, even if I do courses online, still can't be the same as a 24/25 year old who has studied Finance for many years and has done numerous Off Cycles.
Just wanted to ask if this is common at all or what I should do now? Seems to be like all SA for 2023 is pretty much done
I don't think this excuse is BS by the way, I genuinely got along with the team, made an effort to catch up with all of them, worked Sunday's and know that the people I worked with would have vouched for me. Although I do know if your Associate does not have to teach someone Finance, it makes their life a lot easier and they can start on the advanced work right away.
I unfortunately would need a lot more coaching and guiding since it would be my first proper job and have not studied this at all before. Even though they feed you with all of the steep-learning curve and you can study anything during recruitment, I never expected that this would be a factor in me not converting. Especially because I have a clear conscience that I tried and gave it my best and I fully believe that the team knows that.
Bump - genuine advice would be really appreciated!
Especially as not sure how to go about recruiting now as found out very late and most apps are rolling
I don’t think you have anything to worry about lad if your 20 and intended at a top BB you have 5 years to catch up with the other interns. Reapply for summers and go again, your CV will be much better then most others now
SA 2023 isn't over at all what are you on about?
You got bad feedback: work ethic, PERSONALITY, and cultural fit.... This is probably why you were dinged.
how is that bad feedback mate explain pls, you the staffer now?
If you don't know how your personality and work ethic is bad feedback then maybe you shouldn't be a banker. Generally "personality" is only given as feedback if you're generally just not a nice person (massive hardo or an asshole). This isn't a best friend contest, just seeing that you're not an ass. Work ethic is self explanatory.
what do you study?
history
1st time i've heard 'dont study finance' in any sort of feedback AT ALL. Banks keep preaching u dont need to study finance, its easily teachable ....
