Do Analysts Work in Specific Sectors of Banking?
This is probably a dumb question, but do Analyst consider themselves apart of a specific investment banking sector? Do some analyst consider them selves M&A analysts and other DCM Analysts? The website kind of makes it feel like all they do is model, excel, ppt, and emailing.
Most banks are divided into industry coverage groups that focus on client relationships and all types of transactions within a specific industry/sector. Some banks (GS) do M&A within the industry groups, and others have M&A as a separate "product" group that focuses on M&A execution across industries. Capital markets groups (DCM, Lev Fin, ECM, Derivs, etc,) are typically totally separate and distinct from industry coverage groups and are focused purely on execution of that specific type of transaction. Hope that helps!
Second this -- regardless of group you're going to be involved in one, if not all of those programs. I'm in TMT coverage, so an additional part of my day to day involves research on a vertical for a pitch/deal I'm working on.
