Do bankers or HR select non-target apps?

Hey all,

Summer 2022 prospect from a state school here.

I have been networking pretty hard over the past few months and got a few bankers to push my resume to HR.

My question becomes: who picks out the resumes for first rounds?

Since there are analysts running the non-target process and selecting resumes, what good is getting your resume to HR?

Is the end goal to get across to those non-target bankers or is the HR referral?

Yeah that’s what I’m doing - but what’s the point of HR being in the equation if specific bankers are assigned to pick candidates to interview from non core schools? They won’t care if HR flagged your resume, etc

Pretty much any large bank has a very structured recruiting program, kind of like a college admissions office. Depending on the culture HR can be more or less rigid about this but it is always best to make sure they have your resume through some resume drop online or something. However, regardless of how formal the recruiting is, at the end of the day the bankers are the guys running the shop, not HR. So your goal should be to get that alumni/non-target banker to pull for you, they certainly have extensive power in the recruiting process but HR is still at the center of it. Don't want to have a banker pulling for you and HR doesn't even know who you are, they are the ones who often send out the interview/superday invites etc.
