Do HireVues even matter?

Do recruiters actually care about HireVues (SA / FT recruitment)? Isn't the real differentiator the CV even if you mess up a couple of questions?

And if you've got a contact internally who is backing up your candidacy, I bet what you answer won't even really matter.

What do you all think? What is the whole point of HireVues then?

Gotta take your HVs seriously and make a good impression through them either way. Even if you have someone vouching for you or if you have a really strong resume, the HV is often the first step in evaluating you as a candidate. so they definitely matter.

Their weight is imo disproportionately on personality (e.g just making sure you aren’t a total weirdo) and that you have a basic level of knowledge about the firm. People in hiring roles that I’ve spoken to say they watch them with the airport test in mind, pretty much.

They're a check the box to make sure you know what you're doing - hard to differentiate yourself but you can definitely eliminate yourself if you bomb questions... there's not really room to be messing up questions since they ask very open-ended behavioral questions. At least at my firm, someone does watch every last one of them

Unless your internal contact is a high-ranking MD, pretty much everyone applying for IB has multiple people backing them internally so I wouldn't say that is going to help all that much
