Do the current and incoming summer analysts have a say in recruiting? EB vs. BB
Undergrad (targeting SA2021) and WSO lurker at a target school that produces tons of talent into top EB and BB groups.
Recently, someone from my school signed with an EB FRG group, and he apparently is also the new president of a well-known club on campus. There has been a track record of people at the top of the club going to the same great firms/groups, and I feel like the lineage has helped them significantly. Thus, does anyone know whether or not they have a say for people that want to recruit for summer 2021? Should I try to know the current SA's or even incoming SA's? I've heard these guys serve as the gatekeeper and have the ability to push for people even before starting the job, but I don't want someone to ding me because they don't know me.
tl;dr youngling worried that current SA won't like me/don't know me because I'm not in a club -> rejection for when I recruit at that firm SA 2021
At least for regional offices I can answer 100% yes, their opinion is sought although of course it's just one data point out of many. I would assume the same for NYC since strong groups take an active interest in recruiting and the people at the school are closest to the ground, so to speak. People basically recruit others like themselves, for better or worse.
Separately, if someone's not part of "the finance club" at XYZ school our first question is why not? It's like, during your story, you're telling me why you're interested in finance and banking, and why you picked this school and major, so why aren't you in the club? Not always a "deal breaker" but it's something weird.
At my school they did. The people who just finished their summer internship and were now in their senior year had a big role in choosing who would interview for a summer analyst position. My advice would be to get involved in the right clubs and do as much networking with these people so they can get to know you.
It matters greatly, because the way it usually works is that the incoming SA got the role because of a close relationship with existing bankers/recruiters
Really? I don't ever recall asking a SA for their input on a candidate. We definitely sought out input from full-time analysts though.
