I personally would hate to wear a tie EVERY single day. Is wearing a tie the norm in the finance industry? I know a few places or regions where the lifestyle is very laid back and ties are not required unless you have to meet with a client or something.
In my current job we have to dress nice but ties are definitely not required. It's almost like if you wear a tie you look like a dumbass and out of place...I prefer this over having a damn noose around my neck everyday...

Depends where (geographically) and what function. It's pretty standard to wear a tie in PWM, its totally out of place in M&A.

A tie shouldn't be that uncomfortable. Looks like you need a shirt with a larger neck.
In the UK & France a lot of banks are still business formal (Lazard, Barcap, some Roths groups...)
I agree that you should at least consider wearing it especially if you're seeing clients. 20 years from now it may go out of style. who knows

Nice to know that in IBD it's not a requirement at a lot of places. I would imagine PWM would require the tie, a lot of client interaction...
I work in IBD on the West Coast and never wear a tie to work. The only time our guys wear ties is when going to pitches. You rarely see bankers here wearing ties at org meetings, drafting sessions etc.
Note: I work in tech banking so most of our work is on the west coast.

From my experience (Europe) this isn't really the case. It's hard to generalise, very dependent on group, seniority and specific culture.
The issue here is that you're in Europe. My experience has been that our European office isn't exactly on par with our NYC office so it wouldn't shock me if even at my firm they were slightly less formal in Europe.

Are you sure about DB? I was under the impression they were more traditional. Whenever they come to my school, they always rent out the nicest possible event space and have super formal bankers compared to the other banks.

Not sure they're making me - in the sense that I don't think there would be any real consequences if I didn't. It's just everyone else does, so I go along with it.
I always figure that it's easier to take off a tie that you have, than to put one on if you don't have it. If you feel overdressed, it's just that easy.

Im in PB in Chicago, and we go full suit/tie everyday, but if I go to an event and most people are sans tie I tend to take mine off and put it in my coat pocket. But I'm not ever going to be the first one to take the tie off. You just have to read the situation and know the setting.

At my firm one of the older partners who is in his late 60s and from the UK always wears one, my MD doesn't and I wear one in with a jacket but usually take it off.

I normally wear jeans and a casual shirt - wear a suit or tie if i'm going for a nice lunch where everyone else will be formal or to our LP meetings where our investors prefer us to look a bit smarter!!
In PWM most senior brokers just put the tie on before the client meeting. I always thought it was amusing.
In NY most banks have business casual, so it's highly unlikely that you'll be wearing a tie.
In summer i can get away with polo and slacks. Mostly business casual, only time we wear ties are when we're in fund raise mode...
