does first year matter much?
Do you guys think first year will matter too much in terms of your gpa and what you did in school when it comes down to getting that Ibanking job or internship?? I pretty much bombed my first few tests as a direct result of too much partying and because I have a part time job.
Ummm yes?
Some of us have bad GPA's cause we didn't smarten up! Your GPA is cumulative after all and unless you're banking on ACING all your major credits..its best not to screw around with it.
That's my opinion.
its harder afterwards, your first semester is the EASIEST you'll ever have for 3 reasons. 1) Most freshmen take a low course load(12-15 credits), sure it may seem "hard" now, but eventually you end up with higher course loads. At 1 point I was taking 22 credits...and this was over the summer. 2) Majority of your classes are intro bullshit classes, yes it might be "hard", but wait till you have a final day where you have Chemistry, Physics and Calculus finals on the same day. Once again I unfortunately got to experience that. 3) You get spoon fed at Freshman level, after that its all on you.
Can you still get your GPA up? Sure, its only 1 semester...will it be easy? The answer is no. If you don't change your study habits you'll get fucked.
College is not all about grades...its good to party, but you need to be smart about it. Have a midterm tomorrow? Don't get wasted the night before. Use your head.

As long as you can still get your cumulative north of 3.5 by the time you're going after internships
For internships: 3.5+ is good, but 3.7+ is safe.
For the most part, every semester matters in your college career. But, you still have plenty of time to pull your grades up, even in this semester. Getting good grades on your last test and final exam will help you out a lot.
It's good you like to let go and party, you just need to find a good balance of work and going out. You'll get this through trial and error.
People work during school and that won't fly as an excuse for bad grades. If it is going to hurt your GPA than decide if minimum wage is worth the trade off.
Why wouldn't your first year be important? Sounds like you might have f'ed yours--sorry to hear...can I get fries with that?
haha well im not working minimum wage, I work as a server at my parents place so i make a good $150-$250 in tips PLUS minimum wage. for 6-7 hours of work I think its worth it so its not like im sacrificing my study time for $8/hr.
aspiringmonkey, the transition from high school to university in Canada is much more difficult than in the states seeing it as highschools in Canada are a joke and the universities here all have serious grade deflation. Most people here do find first year the toughest year... I didn't mean to say whether or not first year was completely useless...I meant to say Will Ibanks look more closely at your 3rd or 4th year? I guess the answer is No by looking at your replys.
P.s might sound like a dumb question to you guys but my school doesnt have the standard 4.0 gpa system so a 3.5 and 3.7 gpa in letter grades...B, B+, A ??
