Does it really matter what bank you’re at?

Incoming SA at tier 2 BB in a tier 2 group. From the beginning of recruiting I was forced by my family to work at this specific firm in this specific group where a family friend is an MD (was literally not allowed to apply to other firms). But, to be quite frank, my current placement is punching below my weight relative to my background and technical skill (and this is not just me making stuff up, my peers with EB/top BB offers are the ones who put this in my head), and I know how snobby this sounds, but I feel kind of cheated. Trying to seek some solace here. Does the lack of MF placement out of non top groups exist because MF’s discount the skill of non top group bankers? Or do the non top group bankers simply typically perform worse in interviews? TLDR; Are MF placements out of tier 2 BBs and prestige-adjacent banks due to correlation or causation?

Edit: Seems like all the comments are just trying to grill me and focusing on the first half of the post instead of the second. I would really appreciate the actual question being answered

I feel like this comment is getting away from the point of the post, but GPA, target school, resume, interview/behavioral abilities, and I have been technical prepping since September of my freshman year. All of my peers who came to me for advice ended up at top BB’s/EB’s, and now it feels like all the work and reading I did was pointless if I was just gonna get forced to work at a specific bank by my family

if all your friends made it and you didn't, then maybe you left out some important info from your post: Didn't network as much as them, didn't apply to as many roles as them, maybe your character on interviews came off, etc.

but anyway, I'm not a therapist to push you to do self-introspection, just stay grateful you have role thx to your family connect (the alternative would had been no IB/unemployed), work hard, and then lateral when you have the chance

being the big fish in a small pond means that you will get staffed on more interesting things/harder than what others may be

Low key all your responses to the comments and this post show you clearly have a chip on your shoulder and is why you didn't get into a top group and "had" to place at the one with a familial connection...
