Early career advice needed. Moving toward Front Office with a tech background
Hey WSO people,
I'm in need of some career advice, here seemed like the best place to do it.
I graduated in July from a UK university with a CS degree and am taking part of a graduate tech program within an investment bank based in London. As part of that program, we do "rotations" throughout several of the bank's tech teams. At the end of 2020, the rotations end, and we are offered a FT position.
Let me try to organise my thoughts in some way.
The way I see it, I don't really care what I do with the bank. All I know is I'm extremely hungry, don't mind long hours, and am naturally outgoing/extroverted (and also, hopefully, relatively sharp). I like working in stressful, energetic and challenging environments that require focus and precision.
The current program I'm in seems like it's leading me to working database services, production code, platform engineering, data development, etc...
While these jobs are okay, I might as well work for a tech company and get twice the salary that I would get working here.
From all I've read, it seems the highest paying jobs with the most career prospect are in S&L.
So I need to find a way to get close to the FO throughout my rotations, and get as much contact with S&T.
I took this to heart and networked with basically anyone working in a tech division that had the word "trading" in it.
As a result, I secured a rotation for a couple of months in Trading Operations (which I later learnt was intense BO tasks). Apparently (after researching the topic here), even though you're working on the floor with the traders, getting a lot of exposure to financial products and interacting with the FO daily, the move to FO is extremely difficult, if not impossible.
I also have the opportunity of spending some time on an electronic trading desk. This is still a contact in infancy stage, but he seems to say that they may be able to get me a Bloomberg license for a few weeks (meaning I'll be closely involved with the traders).
What advice would you give to a hungry, career/money-oriented person in my position? How can I best set myself up so that when my rotations end in 2020, I am offered a job that will get my as close to the FO as possible? Or in general to a job with high salary and growth potential?
Thanks!!
