Early IB Break In

Is it possible to break into IB early into undergrad, underclassmen years, without being a client kid or md's kid? Or is this common? I know at BB it's much less likely / impossible but, what about mid-market or small botique?

Breaking into investment banking (IB) early in undergrad, especially during underclassmen years, is challenging but not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

  1. Big Banks (BBs): As you mentioned, breaking into BBs early is much less likely unless you have strong connections (e.g., being a "client kid" or "MD's kid"). BBs typically focus on juniors for summer analyst roles, as these are pipelines for full-time offers.

  2. Mid-Market (MM) and Boutique Banks: These firms may offer more flexibility. Some boutiques and MMs are open to hiring underclassmen for internships, especially if you demonstrate strong interest, relevant skills, and a proactive approach. Cold emailing and networking can be particularly effective here.

  3. Networking and Early Preparation:

    • Start building your network early by attending campus events, reaching out to alumni, and joining finance-related clubs.
    • Cold email smaller firms and express your interest in gaining experience, even if it's unpaid or part-time.
    • Highlight your enthusiasm and willingness to learn, as smaller firms may value this over prior experience.
  4. Alternative Paths: If you can't secure an IB internship early, consider related roles like wealth management, corporate finance, or boutique consulting. These experiences can help build your resume and make you a stronger candidate for IB later.

While it's not common to break into IB as an underclassman, persistence, networking, and targeting smaller firms can increase your chances.

Yes. Typically you will intern the summer between 3rd and 4th year. The recruitment process for that begins in the first semester/quarter of your 2nd year. The internship is really the gateway into full-time.

Do people typically find themselves in smaller botiques y1/y2 of undergrad though if they're aiming to go BB route or is that extremely uncommon?
