This guy is an emory troll methinks, he posted in my thread suggesting emory but couldn't provide any rationale behind this opinion...

It's my understanding that UVA has better recruiting for NYC. No disrespect to Emory, which is a fine school. If you want grade inflation, go to an Ivy, haha. Though to be fair, grade inflation is rampant almost everywhere now.

They are both great schools, and if you do well at either school you will have a great chance to make it into ibanking. However, UVA would be better for positions in New York. But, with that being said, if you ended up with a 3.8 from Emory you would have no problem getting a position in New York if you are well rounded. I feel that you should visit both schools and go to the one that you fit into. I visited Emory, and to this day I feel that it was the most beautiful college I've ever visited!

Couple of comments/ 2 cents.

While Emory is a great school, I wouldn't put it in the bucket of HYPS. It's just not accurate. You can look at the profile of the students at each school and they just aren't the same. Lower scores, higher admission rates, lower placement rates into top banks, consulting firm, PE shops, tech firms, etc.

Back to Emory vs. UVA. So just like everyone has said, you can do great things from each of them. I know people that have loved both places.

My personal bias is toward UVA for the following reasons:

(1) Personal: Worked there on a consulting gig for a full year - loved it and wished I applied. UVA campus is beautiful, the corner is great and Charlottesville (sp?) is a nice town. And no, I am not a UVA alum.

(2) Foxfields at the end of the year - look it up. It's amazing. (you get the Augusta PGA tour with Emory though?)

(3) Better banking placement: I've seen a lot more bankers from UVA. I remember seeing a lot of banks coming to campus when I was there (a lot of events were hosted at my hotel). The schools are roughly the same size so this is a big +1 for UVA.

(4) Name Recognition: People know the UVA brand. Its one of best public schools in the country, maybe the best outside of Berkeley. Honestly I couldn't tell you if Emory is a lesser of a known quantity. If your an East Coast guy think of it this way. Do you know Pomona or do you know Berkeley? You know Berkeley, even though Pomona is a great school. No one will ask you what UVA is. They'll ask you what Emory is or "oh, where's that?"

(5) MBA placement: UVA has huge contingents at each of the top MBA programs (as a guy at one, I know). They're about the same size, so this speaks volumes as it shows that (1) either MBA programs like the UVA brand more or (2) people from UVA more often get jobs, relative to Emory, that look good for MBA placement.

(6) Cost: If your in-state UVA is going to be much cheaper.

(7) Proximity to Boston-NYC-DC: This matters for recruiting. At UVA you are going to have no problem recruiting for DC, a real city. NYC is a bit farther, but geographically it is closer NYC and thus companies are more likely to have UVA a target school.

(8) Cavaliers love their school: Hard to find any group of people with more school pride then UVA.

(9) Sports: UVA doens't have amazing sports, but at least it has a 20-40th ranked bball and football team.

I go to Emory. People here are great. However honestly speaking, I feel it is at least very challenging here to get into investment banking, especially if you are not in the undergraduate business school. I don't know about UVA but you should be prepared to work extremely hard if you come to Emory.
