Excel Help - Not too computer literate
Hey everyone,
So I'm not too computer literate and am having some troubles with one of my models. It is by no means a complex one and hasn't that many cells with data or any sophisticated links or formulas. However, I've been trying to fit in some new cells due to assumptions I need to add from a Q in the cash flow and it won't let me. I typically just shift+space bar to select row and then alt, home, i, r to add new row, but recently excel has been telling me that it cannot perform such a task on so much data (even though, there really isn't much).
To navigate this little problem, I've only been selecting colums in the width of my statements (approx 25 columns or so) and inserting new rows and shifting the rest of my rows down. It worked for awhile, but now it's been freezing and Not Responding. I've searched for solutions in help, but there seems to be a plethora of steps that I really don't know would help.
Anybody that has experienced this and knows a quick solution please help me out! I've had to close my model 10 times without saving it because of this shitty glitch.
Thanks,
Anihilist
Somehow you've probably copied a formula or some other data across the whole sheet, ie, as big as excel can go. I never found a solution to it so just copied into a new book.
Yeah, I just did that. It's still irritating though because I have to reformat everything. It's happened with a few of my other models (take like 2 min to even open), and I'm hoping to be able to just clean it up so I don't have to always be moving models to new books.
I've had this problem before. Most likely solution is to select every blank cell outside of your model area and delete it (not clear). What might have happened is that you applied some sort of formatting across entire rows or columns and this is eating up memory through cells that are optically blank.
Turn-off autocalculate if you haven't already done so. Hit Ctrl+End to see where excel "thinks" your data ends. Also, as other have said, clear out all of the formatting outside of your model area.
Thanks everyone, I think it's pretty screwed up. Tried selecting all "inactive" cells and clear of formatting, borders, fills, etc and it still says I have "too much data selected". I'll try the autocalculate though. Actually was able to move all my model into a new sheet that's working fine, but I'd still like to figure out what the hell is wrong with the other one.
As I mentioned clearing won't necessarily work, you have to DELETE the inactive cells...you can use Alt-e-d. Side note, check the size of your excel file, if it's more than like 2 megs this is almost certainly the problem.
Haha, yeah. Not sure why, but it's ~24MB. Have no idea why though. Idk if I can even save it. If I do anything to format or clear cells it becomes unresponsive.
Do you hide rows outside of working cells (I typically hide everything below 5 rows underneath and outside 5 columns right of the model)? I only have this problem when I do this - and I can always solving it by creating a new workbook.
Haven't hidden anything in this book except maybe one or two rows/columns.
And FYI, you don't have to select a row to insert a new row. You can just use alt+h+i+r without the shift space.
My preferred method is to select the row or column then go with CtrlShift+ (to add row or column).
I know it's a little weird but there's value to me somehow of seeing where the whole new row or column will be by highlighting it
