Failed EB/BB/MM IB recruiting - How do I recruit for LMM?

Title. Did well (9 total interviews) with "regular" sophomore IB recruiting but with only 6 total processes, didn't have the numbers for success. Still interested in IB and M&A as a whole and am eyeing to LMM.
Would love any insight into how LMM recruiting typically takes place, if its similar to regular recruiting, and any success stories of people recruiting LMM and lateraling to EB/BB/MM

Lower Middle Market (LMM) recruiting differs significantly from the structured processes of BB/EB/MM banks. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Recruiting Timeline:

    • LMM firms often have less structured and more variable timelines compared to larger banks. Some firms hire 12-15 months in advance, while others may wait until the fall or even spring before the start date. This means you’ll need to stay proactive and flexible.
  2. Direct Outreach:

    • Unlike BB/EB/MM banks, LMM firms may not rely heavily on headhunters. Instead, they often recruit directly from targeted investment banks or through networking. This is especially true for regional LMM firms or those not located in major financial hubs.
  3. Networking:

    • Networking is critical. Reach out directly to LMM firms to express your interest. Building relationships with professionals at these firms can help you stand out, as they often prioritize cultural fit and genuine interest in their niche.
  4. Interview Process:

    • The interview process at LMM firms can vary. Some may focus less on technicals, while others might expect you to handle a wide range of responsibilities, including technical tasks, due to the leaner team structures. Be prepared for both scenarios.
  5. Why LMM?:

    • Have a strong answer for why you’re interested in LMM over larger firms. Highlight the benefits of working in LMM, such as exposure to the full deal process, the opportunity to take on more responsibility early, and the chance to work closely with senior professionals.
  6. Success Stories:

    • Many professionals have successfully started in LMM and lateraled to BB/EB/MM. The key is to gain strong deal experience, build your technical skills, and maintain a solid network. Highlighting your deal reps and end-to-end involvement in transactions can make you an attractive candidate for larger firms down the line.
  7. Proactive Approach:

    • If you’re targeting specific LMM firms, reach out early to register your interest. Even if they’re not hiring immediately, staying on their radar can pay off when opportunities arise.

By focusing on networking, tailoring your approach to the less structured nature of LMM recruiting, and emphasizing your interest in the unique aspects of LMM, you can position yourself for success.
