Feeling Stuck in a No-name Boutique
Hi Guys!
I'm just here to rant a bit and to see if there's anyone else also in the same boat so we can share our experiences with each other.
So basically, I'm at a no-name boutique that's been started by some ex-BB guys. I've been here for a while and the pay is way below market (more than 50% less) and no bonus. Yes, I know maybe I shouldn't have taken it but it was the only thing I got.
I've been trying to network, through alum, LinkedIn, etc. and have had 0 success in connecting with people. Although the deal flow is great here, the boss constantly tries to prevent us from getting exposure and obstructs us from any sort of client interaction. It sounds pathetic but this even goes as far as having a 0 email policy with clients. So when I have a question for the client, it usually goes I ask my team head, he asks the client, client replies to him, he gets back to me. Not the most efficient way to get anything done.
I do have one ED who's particularly nice to me and tries to help me gain exposure and I'm really really grateful for what she's been doing. But guess what, she got berated for doing this... My own team is filled with people who are incompetent and always try to pin the blame on me for things that I haven't done. I've mostly just sucked it up and moved on but it's getting to a point where I can't really stand it anymore
I'm also prepping for MBA but I feel my chances are slim for any good school given my work profile even though I have a solid GPA + GMAT/GRE.
I don't know what I can do now and feel stuck. Does anyone have any advice to give?
How long have you been there?
More than half a year.
I think that is an area, BBs are hiring mainly hiring for at least a full year analyst. My advice work really hard for this ED and try to build and foster a mentor relationship with her. Apply for roles, and when its serious like round 2 interview at a role you want, ask her to send in a recommendation, continue to network.
omg you're so stuck in there
most important questions. Are you guys closing deals?
In this environment, junior experienced talent is still hard to come by. I suggest collecting a solid amount of deals on your resume, and lateralling after a year in.
Yes, I've already closed 3 deals, directly pitched to investors to close them.
I'm just not generating a lot of leads in terms of getting interviews or networking.
