Finding Purpose Senior Year
I have been having some trouble finding motivation and medium term goals for my senior year of college. Summer in IB went great, I lateraled to another firm and am starting in my dream group, so I am very excited to graduate and start.
The issue is that I have almost too much free time on my hands now. After 80-90 hour weeks, I feel guilty not progressing towards something meaningful. Most days I wake up between 7-8, go to the gym, have a class or two, have lunch and read a chapter of a book, finish classes, go for a run or to a club meeting, then chill with friends. Other than becoming more fit, I don't really have anything material to work towards. I am studying for the GRE to apply to deferred MBA program solely to take up time on something worth while.
Some advice I have gotten is just to party and fuck. Currently I party around once a week and honestly it is something which is not super enjoyable to me anymore. My party people started doing coke and Ketamine, in addition to weed and alc which adds a new dynamic to the parties which aren't really for me. The drinking can be a bit intense, each of us drinking 10-14 drinks. As far as fucking goes, casual is not really my style and since I am leaving for NYC soon, there does not seem to be a whole of reason to pursue something new (long term) with a end date so close.
I'm being more involved with start-ups at my uni, a society/final club/order I am in, and trying to mentor kids interested in banking (although not many seem interested). Any thoughts on how to maximize my last semesters?
*Sorry, I know questions like this have already been asked, but still think it is worth posting due to the story associated with it.
Went through the same thing you did and I have friends in college now who are also feeling the same way so hopefully I can help a little.
Some of my friends got another internship and others went the “party and fuck route” - up to you what you want but I personally decided to focus more on hobbies and interests I had.
I started from premed and then went to finance so a lot of my sophomore / junior year focused on getting up the learning curve and recruiting (non-target so had to grind)
Senior year I decided to pick up guitar and it sort of worked the same way the gym does. You suck and don’t know what to do at first but slowly, you see self improvement and that drove my commitment. Also started learning another language and got super into art history and world history.
Not saying you should do these exact things but I would take senior year to do a little soul searching and find things that genuinely interest you. Maybe that’s a salsa class or you want to get into kickboxing. Whatever it is, build on it and harness it because trust me when I tell you, you won’t get this time back.
When you’re in industry, you can make time for your hobbies and interests if you really want, but picking up things you have no prior experience in is tough. End of the day, this is your life and you only have one of it. Live it in a way that you won’t regret.
Cheers
Go out and have fun, you’ll have plenty of time to work etc soon enough
