First year analyst - 9m experience and learning very little?

Hi all. First year analyst at decent BB in coverage group. From a technical standpoint, I feel like I’ve learned VERY little and don’t necessarily have the time (wfh, worse hours, you all know) to fully teach myself modeling / complex model / even smaller things like more complicated excel formulas. How have other first years felt? How and what do you do to learn more?

the model templates we do have are shitty Bc you just plug in numbers without needing to understand shit... and associates + older analysts (most have left) are not really willing to go through or explain much.

Here's the strategy, and it's going to involve some work outside of your normal working hours.

Start a brand new model from scratch. Focus on doing a little bit every week, and write down any questions that you have regarding a particular section in the model. Take these questions, and strategically allocate them across your vp/associate. Example: If you have 10 questions, at the end of every call ask one question. Literally tell the VP/associate, I have only "one question, which will trick them into wanting to help you because it's only one question". Through this strategy you won't bombard the vp/associates with questions but you'll get the information you're looking for over time. If you have 10 calls, great. You have 10 opportunities to ask one question.

Focus on mastering a section in a model every week and strategically asking questions about that specific part of the model, and you'll master the model one day.
