UF vs. Miami

Hello, I am a rising senior finalizing my college list. I want to apply to one Florida school. I like University of Florida and Miami but I am wondering if you guys could give your input on which one is better for IB recruiting. Thanks a lot.

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

  • University of Florida (UF):

    • UF has had a lot of recent success with IB placement, particularly from the MSF program.
    • UF is considered a good school for IB, with decent placement in the industry.
    • On-campus recruiting at UF can be advantageous, and the school has a strong network of alumni in IB.
  • University of Miami:

    • There is some uncertainty about the IB placement at the University of Miami based on online research.
    • It is not clear if many companies recruit on campus at Miami, but there are inquiries about its placement and clubs for IB hopefuls.

In summary, UF seems to have a stronger track record and more clarity regarding IB placement, especially with its MSF program. If IB recruiting is your primary focus, UF might be the better choice.

First, I would just apply to both and do a deeper comparison once/if you get in. For UG, both have a presence on the street, but candidly neither are true semi-targets.

The UF MSF program seems to have good recruiting traction, but I believe that it is separate from UG, hence you'd have to figure out if you'd be a competitive candidate there. UM has the Bermont-Carlin program, which has good placement. Citi is the main recruiter at UM. There are also a lot of Family Offices and Boutiques in Miami that you could intern at.

Both are good choices, but do a deeper comparison after you get into both.

I have three friends at UM that are really struggling - 3.9+ GPA's but cannot get first rounds.
Think that UF is not much better unless you go the distance with a MFE or early entry into an M7 MBA program.

Commented this on another post, TLDR UF > UM, if you wanna stay in Miami FIU is cheaper / still gives you IB looks + you can get off cycle PE / IB internships at boutiques in Miami

“As it relates to UM, I’ve seen a decent amount of kids break into banking especially into Citi / BAML. However, IMO unless you get a full ride I would consider FIU if you’re focused on staying in Miami.

I personally went to FIU and was able to break into a BB / have seen others recently get offers at EBs / BBs.

If you’re considering all Florida schools, UF is probably the best to pipeline into IB. Their MSFin 4 years path usually gets looks from Evercore.”

I went to Miami and graduated during Covid and was able to find my way to a BB. Going to Miami were the best years of my life. The new dorms they built look really nice too. Being able to hangout by friends pool any day of the year or go to the beach was so nice.

That being said, UF definitely does better with recruiting. Citi has a decent connection to Miami due to Bill Fisse who is now retired but was an HR director at Citi for like 30 years and he went to UM. He does career coaching now.

Something to keep in mind and I'm not even joking - a ton of rich girls from Connecticut, New Jersey, and Long Island go to UM and their dads are often finance execs, my girlfriend's dad being one of them. "Networking" with them helped me out a ton lol.
