FT Networking

Hi! I ended up getting an offer for summer 27' at a decent MM (NYC). I'm still ambitious for a BB/EB, so when would you recommend networking for FT (closer to internship or earlier in junior year)? Also, do I mention that I have an offer lined up (if so, how do I go about introducing that in terms of my outreach)?

Thanks!

To maximize your chances of landing a BB/EB full-time role, here's what you should focus on:

  1. Start Networking Early: Based on the most helpful WSO content, you should begin networking as soon as possible, even before your internship starts. The key is to build relationships, not just "network for FT." Use this time to connect with professionals, learn about their experiences, and establish rapport. By the time FT recruiting begins, you'll already have a strong network to leverage.

  2. Timing Your Outreach: While starting early is crucial, many professionals suggest circling back closer to your internship. This allows you to provide updates on your experience and demonstrate your growth. For example, you can reconnect mid-summer or towards the end of your internship when firms have a clearer picture of their hiring needs.

  3. Mentioning Your Offer: It's generally a good idea to mention your summer offer, but do so tactfully. Frame it as a positive step in your career while expressing your interest in exploring other opportunities. For example:

    • In your outreach, you could say: "I’m excited to be interning at [MM Firm] this summer, but I’m also eager to learn more about opportunities at [BB/EB Firm] for full-time roles. I’d love to hear about your experience and any advice you might have for someone in my position."
  4. Networking Strategy:

    • Before the Internship: Focus on informational conversations. Ask about their career paths, the culture at their firms, and advice for excelling in your internship.
    • During the Internship: Update your contacts on your progress and express your interest in their firm. This is also a good time to ask about their hiring timelines.
    • After the Internship: If you don’t secure a return offer or want to lateral, leverage the relationships you’ve built to inquire about FT opportunities.
  5. Consistency is Key: Stay in touch with your network throughout the process. As one WSO contributor noted, many candidates fail to follow up after initial conversations, which can hurt their chances. Regular, meaningful follow-ups will keep you on their radar.

Good luck with your networking and FT recruiting journey!
