FT Recruiting

Currently have an internship in LMM M&A and they don't give return offers at the end of summer, have to re recruit for them later this year if want a FT offer. They are starting a few analysts soon so unsure about the amount of spots they will have. Top priority now is leaving the best impression to try and get an offer FT, but wondering how the recruiting process usually plays out. Thinking of drafting some emails and reaching out to some previous contacts soon but unsure of what steps to take or how to go about FT recruiting in general. Mainly looking to recruit in the MM - LMM space. Any advice would be appreciated.

To navigate full-time (FT) recruiting effectively, especially in the MM and LMM space, here’s a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Maximize Your Current Internship

  • Leave a strong impression: Focus on excelling in your current role. Know your deals inside and out, build strong relationships with senior bankers, and demonstrate a proactive attitude. Even if they don’t offer return offers immediately, being a standout intern increases your chances of securing one later.
  • Business development: If possible, contribute to sourcing or business development efforts. This shows initiative and adds value to the firm.

2. Start Networking Early

  • Reconnect with previous contacts: Reach out to your network, including alumni, mentors, and professionals you’ve connected with before. Let them know about your current internship and your interest in FT roles.
  • Timing: While some firms may not have immediate openings, starting conversations early ensures you’re on their radar when positions open up.
  • Coffee chats and calls: Use these interactions to learn about their hiring timelines, team needs, and any advice they might have for your situation.

3. Draft a Strong Resume

  • Highlight your LMM M&A experience, focusing on deal exposure, technical skills, and any measurable contributions. Tailor your resume to emphasize skills relevant to MM and LMM firms.

4. Understand the FT Recruiting Timeline

  • MM and LMM firms: These firms often have less structured recruiting processes compared to BBs or EBs. Some may hire as early as late summer, while others recruit closer to the end of the year or even into the spring.
  • Be proactive: Since timelines vary, it’s crucial to stay in touch with firms and recruiters to understand their specific hiring needs.

5. Target MM and LMM Firms

  • Direct outreach: Many LMM firms don’t use headhunters, so reaching out directly to firms is key. Express your interest and inquire about potential openings.
  • Focus on fit: Highlight your experience in LMM M&A and your understanding of the unique dynamics of smaller deals.

6. Prepare for Interviews

  • Technical preparation: Be ready to discuss accounting, valuation, and deal-specific questions. Know the details of the deals you’ve worked on and be able to articulate your role and contributions.
  • Behavioral preparation: Be prepared to answer questions about why you’re looking to move, what you’ve learned from your current internship, and how you can add value to their team.

7. Have a Backup Plan

  • If FT recruiting doesn’t yield immediate results, consider starting at your current firm (if they offer a role later) and lateraling after 6-12 months. This can sometimes be a more effective way to transition to a larger MM firm.

By focusing on these steps, you’ll position yourself well for FT recruiting in the MM and LMM space. Good luck!

Wanted to comment that I'm in the exact same boat. Currently SA at a very small (think 5-10 people) LMM M&A shop that may or may not be looking to hire anyone new post-internship. I'm the only intern. Feeling tons of pressure to network but not sure the best way to go about it; surprisingly rare to find forums about FT recruiting on here or anywhere else. Was thinking of trying to commit to tons of cold (or warm) outreach and see what happens – is that your plan, too?
