Get into healthcare investment banking / biotech midcareer?

I'm going to sound like a crazy person with this thread

I'm a Medical Doctor, but who has been working in industry for a while on the commercial side. Before that I worked for the Medicare program making coverage decisions and pricing new technology. At one point in time I ran my own practice and consulted to a for profit hospital group on Medicare issues. Due to past experience I have a decent grasp of the three statement financial models and how to read between the lines of what is written in SEC filings in healthcare.

I was thinking of trying to head into the Investment Banking world or Equities analysis. I'm probably a few years away (I want to be financially secure before making such a big leap), but as this will be a major switch for me I wanted to start exploring things well in advance to decide if this is something that I want to do.

However, from reading on this forum it seems like a lot of people go into IB via standard recruiting pathways. I wanted to try to reach out to people in the field for true coffee chats just to get a better sense of the industry and understand what they might be looking for in someone who is not in college. Any recommendations on doing this?

Not sure about biotech but for healthcare banking, find and cold message medical doctors that are in that space. I know of a few around the VP - MD level. Not common to see them but I'd imagine they will likely respond to a fellow M.D.

If you're thinking biotech corporate, look at medical science liaison as a way to get your foot in the door (some of these liaison jobs have amazing perks and are high paying - easily 200K+). Highly sought after though by ex-clinicians.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning into healthcare investment banking or biotech mid-career is absolutely possible, especially with your unique background as a Medical Doctor with commercial and Medicare experience. Here's a roadmap to help you navigate this shift:

  1. Leverage Your Healthcare Expertise: Your deep understanding of healthcare systems, Medicare, and financial models is a significant advantage. Healthcare IB groups highly value professionals with domain expertise, especially those who can bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and financial analysis.

  2. Networking is Key: Start reaching out to professionals in healthcare IB or equity research for coffee chats. Focus on building genuine relationships rather than just seeking opportunities. Use LinkedIn to identify alumni from your medical school or past employers who are now in finance. Tailor your outreach to highlight your unique background and interest in transitioning.

  3. Develop a Clear Story: Be prepared to articulate why you're making this career switch. Highlight your transferable skills (e.g., financial modeling, understanding of healthcare regulations, and strategic insights) and how they align with the needs of healthcare IB or equity research.

  4. Consider an MBA or CFA: While not mandatory, an MBA from a top program or a CFA designation can help bridge the gap and make you more competitive. An MBA, in particular, can provide access to on-campus recruiting and internships in IB.

  5. Target Healthcare-Focused Firms: Focus on boutique or middle-market banks with strong healthcare practices, as they may value your specialized knowledge more than generalist firms. Additionally, healthcare-focused equity research teams or funds could be a good fit.

  6. Prepare for Interviews: Practice technical questions, especially around financial modeling and valuation, as well as behavioral questions. Be ready to discuss healthcare-specific case studies or stock pitches.

  7. Start Early: Since you're a few years away from making the leap, use this time to build relationships, enhance your financial skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the industry.

  8. Resources to Explore:

    • WSO's Networking Guide for tips on effective outreach.
    • Healthcare IB threads on WSO for insights into the field.
    • Stock pitch templates to refine your equity analysis skills.

Your background is unique and highly valuable in healthcare IB. With the right preparation and networking, you can position yourself as a strong candidate. Good luck!
