Getting Housing Early in NYC - Good Idea?

My roommate who I have been living with since college, and is going to the same NYC BB as me very much wants to move into an apartment as soon as possible to "make sure that we don't get screwed for housing in July", when we both start our analyst stints. However, I personally think moving in now and paying 3 months of rent solely to secure an apartment, is a bit excessive. With that being said as well, I will be traveling and he will be doing almost all the apartment tours and negotiations for us so it almost seems like I should go with what he wants because he will be doing most of the leg work.

We plan on living in one of the following neighborhoods: Soho, Tribeca, Chinatown, Little Italy, FiDi - and are aiming for a simple 2 bedroom 1 bath. As cheap as possible.

I wanted to hear opinions on whether I am correct in my thinking, or if he is indeed correct in that we should try to lock in a place as soon as possible so there are no issues.

Really appreciate any advice possible, thanks!

Really appreciate it. Yeah we were thinking of those places, soley because of the fact that we wanted to live as close to our firm as possible.

I was also thinking of living in Jersey as well, but the shortest commute was about 25 min via train + walking. Is that possible or not with the IBD hours? Figured I would save at least 10K in taxes alone
