Giving up a FT role for an off-cycle

Hey everyone,

Would be very interested to get some views on this. Currently working in S&T and have been invited to a final round for an off-cycle at a MM for a 6 month off-cycle in M&A.

I know S&T isn’t for me but also trying to give up a full time role and loose out on having a stable income.

Wondering what the rationale has been for people in similar positions? Or any tips as to if this is a wise idea or not.

What is the usual off-cycle conversion rate for that bank, and would they be able to hire you for an immediate start job or is the start date aligned with the next new grad cycle? And how long have you been working in S&T?

Also depends how tight money is - can your parents support you for a few months if you end up with no role, or do you absolutely rely on your paychecks?

Assuming you have some leeway for 3 months between jobs, I would take the off-cycle. I usually advise against this but it is difficult to get from S&T to IB

Thanks for your reply!

From LinkedIn seems like on average 60-70% have converted but kinda hoping it’s higher as the market hopefully improves towards end of year and early next year (not sure about this)

Been in S&T for a few months now but had my story straight about why I want to move to IB and networked my ass off. Parents cannot support me but I’ve barely spent money so worst comes to worst I have my own buffer of around 15k

I know it’s tough and I’ve struggled tbh! Have you heard of other making the switch?

I wouldn't bet on the hiring market getting much better. Even if deal flow picks up it takes another 6+ months to see it in open roles

IMO take the internship but once you're 2-3 months in, also be networking at other MM/boutiques for an immediate FT start. It's perfectly acceptable to go to your staffer at month 3-4 and say you love the firm and want to stay there, but you have a FT offer from another firm and need to know if you should take it. Obviously make sure you perform well up to that point. Don't let it get to month 6 with no offer or other jobs lined up, $15k is a pretty short amount of buffer
