Gmat score asked during a rather short Investment Banking interview

So I had a phone interview with 2 bankers on a conference call today which went on for 15 mins.

it was 1st round interview and after 4-5 questions, they asked me for my gmat.

my gmat is mid 600's and they were done.. they asked me if i had any questions for them. Additionally the asked me to check back in sep when they decide the future of summer interns and decide on vacancy..

What should i think of this. the firm is a regional boutique and I am not sure if my score is low for IB :S

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I will have to wait 2 months for an update !! Was he serious or is that a No right away

I answered everything properly and In fact I believe I was over prepared cause I devoted a lot of time to the interview.

@ Mxc I have a 640 ..not 600 additionally my grades are good as I have an MBA with distinction and I also previously worked in wealth management, so i demonstrated my advisory skills.

typical Q were.. walk me through ur resume, Why IB, Why your school, What firms, What do you know about IB and the gmat

Do boutiques technically hire during fall after evaluating summer interns and interview as early and ask to check back like this..

Nobama.

I cant pin point anything that I said would turn them off and I had done some research on them to have a good set of questions to ask them.

I tend to know before hand if my interview went bad but here i was just puzzled they did not ask more questions and it just landed 15 minutes

Its from a #50-55 ranked school. Eff this sh*t.

Is there no way I can get a job in IB with a 640 gmat and 3.7 GPA?? even after tons of networking that Iv done?

Id be happy if you guys gave me a realization check.

Its been difficult to get interviews for sure more like finding one needle in a world full of haystacks.. but I thought after u get the interview its all about "you" and how you communicate and not just gmat..

im not even sure of what is on the list after the top 30, and anything above top 20 for mba begins to make it difficult at least for the BBs and obviously finance and consulting have been constricted a lot which adds to your woes... i dont want to say its impossible but are there alumni from your schools that work in banking? is that who youve been targeting/ even if the shops are super regional the guys may still be looking for really smart guys in the niche markets.

what was your quant on the 640 gmat, did you crush that but just drop the ball on verbal?

Hey thanks for the suggestions..I had mock interviews several of them.. I will practice again obviously for future opportunities.

My verbal and quant were abt the same percentile. I could have done better.. but there is no use looking back. I gave it once and I wanted to get in B school sooner due to the recession..

I will def follow up with the firm in Sep, if I havnt found anything for myself. But I think if they wanted me, they would have told me so and expect me to wait until Sep

anyway thanks guys!

Akash, what school did you go to?

I was in a similar position, except I did my MSF at a similarly ranked school. I did tons of IB interviews for FT before I was successful. It took me some time to get good at them (and I thought I was good when I first started, but wasn't).

Different banks have different deciding factors.
