Goldman Online Application
The online GS application has non-mandatory sections where you can fill in things such as leadership experience, AP scores, etc. There are also mandatory fields, like cover/motivation letter (where you have to copy/paste, can't upload), etc.
Do you actually fill these out, and does it even matter? I thought the screeners just look at your resume to pick first rounds.
FYI: I go to a target and I'm applying through OCR as well.
they invite you via OCR even if you don't apply online.

Interesting -- so the application through the careers website doesn't matter (at all) if you apply through OCR, even though OCR requires you to apply through their careers website as well?
Is this true? It would seriously save me a ton of time.
Such was the case with me. I ignored the instruction and didn't apply online but still got invited. Other banks however sent friendly reminders.
If you're serious about GS, just fill it out. If you get an interview, great. If not, you'll wonder if your careers template had anything to do with it. Cover your bases to be safe. And save all content you put into the form. Will save you a ton of time on other cover letters / job apps / grad school apps down the road...
They make you do the online application so that they can have the authority to do a background check. OCR submissions do not give them a legal right I believe.
This is more of a behind the scenes kind of question: will bankers who are selecting candidates for first round interviews through OCR drops also have access to their application through the bank's website, or do they only have the resume/cover letters that were submitted to OCR?

When applying online at Goldman (and at other firms that do this), they give you the option of applying to a second division. If you select a second division, how is that displayed to the reviewers, is it just two different applications or do they see that the second division is not your preference? Would it be a good idea to not select a second division to show your interest and dedication to your first choice? Also, has anybody here ever been invited to an interview for a position where he applied online as his second choice? Thanks
I don't think it matters - I had IBD and GIR on mine and it didn't seem to hurt me.
If you are relying on goldman's online resume drop you are in a lot of trouble to begin with... unless you have someone looking for it, its pretty much going into a black hole.

And I would say that applies to other firms besides GS. Applying online is not the best idea unless you have somoene on the inside as Bill Ray mentioned. Good luck.
I applied online a few places before I cold called them just so I could say yes my application was already with the firm etc. but the online app alone is a fairly sure way of not getting your resume looked at.
Thanks. My question was basically could it hurt to fill out that second choice. What I get from your answers is that it doesn't. In that case, even if it is a very small chance, it would be foolish not to fill it out.
the marginal benifit of filling it out is greater than the marginal cost of not filling out

A few of my friends have interviews from just applying online. HR looks at every single resume, contrary to popular belief.
So yes, it does happen, but not often I don't think.
no fill it out. GS regularly gives out first rounds for multiple divisions. they may thereafter refer you to another one if they see a better fit
GS almost never gives interviews out to people through the normal online application system. If you are referred by a current employee, you are sent a link to an entirely different application system which is what they actually use to give out probably 99.9% of interviews.
