Good CV (debatable), horrible academics, no return offer, what would you do?
Final year at a UK target and could use some brutally realistic advice.
I spent my first two years on a finance-related degree, completely fucked Year 2 academically, failed a module, and now have to transfer onto another closely related degree within the same department because I didn’t meet the progression requirements. Year 2 is 50% of my final classification, so yes, I know I’ve made this significantly harder for myself.
The weird part is that the rest of my profile isn’t terrible. I’ve done an asset management summer internship [client coverage not investments :( ], banking spring week, investment/wealth internships, an alternative credit spring programme, stock pitching/research etc. I didn’t get a return offer from my AM summer, though, so I’m now back recruiting for 2027 summers in my final year.
Long-term I’m increasingly interested in infrastructure/infrastructure investing, but frankly right now I’m applying fairly broadly across IB, advisory, AM and private markets.
IB was something I wanted years ago before I properly understood what the job was. After actually working in finance, I weirdly want it more. I realised I perform much better when things are fast-paced, demanding and there is actual pressure/accountability. My summer was useful, but it also made me realise that a very relaxed environment probably isn’t what I want long-term.
So: if you were me, what would you actually do now?
Is IB still realistically recruitable with this academic record/course change? Should I lean hard into infrastructure/infra advisory instead? How much does not converting the AM internship hurt? And when firms ask about the academics, how would you explain this without sounding like you’re making excuses?
Not looking for reassurance. Just trying to figure out the highest-EV move from here 🙏🏻
