Google buys Motorola Mobility

Just in that Google is buying Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion...

Definitely a game-changer for the mobile space; It'll be fascinating to see how this plays out. How do people think this might impact HTC, Samsung, and others? I use an iPhone myself, but look forward to seeing what Google has in store.

Yeah, it's a patent play. With all the lawsuits in the mobility space recently, I guess Google decided it was cheaper just to buy a company to get the IP instead of licensing it or fighting in court.

RevolutionInteresting that no BB's were advising on this deal. All boutiques

I know, that confused me too. Lazard and Qatalyst... For $12.5 billion you'd think that they would've wanted a BB.

All cash. Don't need the balance sheet I guess. Qatalyst = win.

I'm confused. Please explain to me why a BB would be more useful in an all-cash M&A transaction.

Some of the support from competitors is based in the overwhelming distaste with apple and constant legal battles. Also, the the further buttressing of android as a universal mobile software will help development and strengthen its battle against Mac OS.

not surprised by centerview as they advised motorola on some stuff before

i guess cs is not the google designated advisor anymore

Great move by Google. They acquired over 17,000 patents from Moto to aid in its defense of Android from Apple.

Crapple started an all-out patent war, and now Google is going to finish it.

This.

Apple's last pathetic move to slow down a real OS (patent trolling) has now effectively been blocked; they won't have time to seek the injunctions they have on petty grounds because Google can now defend Android manufacturers.

Interesting move. IMHO there are other assets (IP-rich but with spotty operations) out there with similar / more IP that wouldn't compete with Google's Android handset partners though and wouldn't cost over $10 billion to take down.

true, and i think moto has some assets (facilities) that google probably doesn't want. Google might do a spinoff of moto and just keep the patents.

Nah I think they'll keep the business, facilities and all, as an in-house device manufacturer, like a reference platform - there might be a spin to be had in the cable infrastructure assets (Google making CMTS and set-top boxes? Doubtful)
