Greenwich: Where to live
I’m starting my first job out of college and deciding where to live. I work in Greenwich and considering somewhere like Stamford versus Manhattan. I would try to live near midtown and would have an 1:15+ door to door commute 5 days a week. Alternatively, I could just live outside the city and have like a 10 min drive. I am expecting 12 hour days and also prioritize working out. I’m really torn if being near friends is worth it. I would like to go out and stay out late on Saturdays, so I appreciate the close access to bars but am not crazy or anything
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to consider:
Commute and Work Hours: With 12-hour workdays, a 1:15+ door-to-door commute from Manhattan to Greenwich will be exhausting. Many WSO users emphasize that long commutes can lead to burnout, especially in demanding roles. A shorter commute, like a 10-minute drive from Stamford or nearby areas, will give you more time to sleep, work out, and maintain your energy levels.
Social Life and Proximity to Friends: Living in Manhattan offers unparalleled access to nightlife, bars, and social activities, which is great for staying connected with friends and enjoying your weekends. However, if you live in Connecticut (e.g., Stamford), you can still visit NYC occasionally for social events, though it might not be as frequent as you think. Stamford itself has some nightlife options, and you’ll likely find other young professionals in the area.
Lifestyle and Priorities: If working out and maintaining a balanced lifestyle are priorities, living closer to work in Connecticut might be the better choice. It allows you to avoid the stress of a long commute and gives you more time for personal activities like exercise. Plus, Stamford offers a more relaxed environment compared to the hustle of NYC.
Taxes and Cost of Living: Connecticut generally has lower taxes and a more affordable cost of living compared to Manhattan. This could allow you to save more and enjoy a better quality of life, such as having your own car and living without roommates.
Compromise Option: Stamford is a popular choice for those working in Greenwich. It’s close enough to NYC for occasional trips and offers a shorter commute to work. The new Harbor Pointe development in Stamford, for example, is highly recommended for its convenience and amenities.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your priorities. If being near friends and nightlife is crucial, Manhattan might be worth the tradeoff. But if you value a shorter commute, more personal time, and a balanced lifestyle, living in Stamford or another nearby Connecticut town is the smarter choice.
