Group Placement 2026

For context, received an SA 26 offer for a lower tier BB in NYC, so really want to focus on getting into a top group during group placement. Does anyone know if GPA really matters for group placement? I will definitely have a 3.7+ by then but not sure if I can get to a 3.8+ and I am worried that'll affect me in getting my top choices.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, GPA can play a role in group placement, but it’s not the sole determining factor. While a 3.8+ GPA is often seen as a benchmark for standing out, a 3.7+ is still competitive, especially if you excel in other areas. For group placement, factors like networking, your performance during the summer analyst program, and how well you align with the group’s culture and needs can outweigh a slight difference in GPA.

To maximize your chances of landing in a top group: 1. Network Early: Start building relationships with members of your desired groups before placement begins. This can give you an edge when they’re deciding who to bring on. 2. Excel During the Internship: Demonstrate strong technical skills, a great work ethic, and a positive attitude. Your reputation during the internship can heavily influence group placement. 3. Show Interest in the Group: Make it clear why you’re interested in a specific group and how your skills align with their focus.

While GPA is important, especially for initial screening, your ability to network and perform during the internship will likely have a greater impact on group placement.

Group placement isn’t very dependent on your GPA, school, and work experience tbh. They know everyone has similar credentials since they all got into the program so there’s a larger emphasis on fit and personality.
