Happiest Moment

We spend a majority of our life sleeping and working. When I think back, some of my happiest moments in life had nothing to do with my career or money. Shouldn't we try to spend most of our time doing the things that we love doing? What is the happiest moment you have ever experienced? Are you actively trying to do it as much as possible?

Not sure if happy, sad, or bittersweet.

I have severe depression, but took a long time to get the help I needed (right after this event below).

I remember being at The Ocean Course at Kiawah (sentimental place where my family visited multiple times a year). I was in the middle of a really bad depression episode even though everything in my life was great - life was great, great girlfriend, great friends, good job, etc. The couple weeks leading up to the round I was extremely close to ending it all - I just hated being alive and didn’t want to live another day.

I go on my family vacation and my dad and I are playing a twilight round at the Ocean Course. I just remember looking out into the ocean on the 16th hole and thinking “how great is this world”. So much calmness, doing something I love in the place I love. Everything just slowed down and made sense, I really can’t describe it.

2 weeks later I told my family about my depression, and got the help I needed - which saved my life.

Thank you for sharing your story, that is absolutely incredible! I hope more people are able to be as strong as you and really try to communicate with those around them if they are having any mental health issues. More so if they don't have anyone at all to talk to, it's difficult to seek an outlet to discuss, and let alone discuss your personal issues themselves. This was very heartwarming to read and I am happy that you are at a better place!

Definitely need the threads you’ve made more often. I’ll occasionally scroll through WSO and have seen so many posts lately of people questioning if life is worth living.

One of my best friends committed suicide - I was one of the last ones to talk to him and had no idea what he was dealing with. I saw how it impacted his family, friends, and community. It took me a year to realize what he did would happen to me if I didn’t get help.

Life is tough, but for anybody reading this, someone wants you here - life is worth living.

For others who may have relatable experiences, can you share what "got the help I needed" entailed?

Bonus Question: I've got some personality issues that would probably benefit tremendously from CBT but I've never really been able to find a way to make consistent therapy work with IB hours and the fact that most psychologists are only available 9-5 on week days. Mix in the prohibitive cost of a lot of these providers and it's a tough dynamic. How did you manage all of that?

We need more content like this on WSO. Life is amazing. Of all the things the entropy of the universe could have made you into, you became a human being that is sentient. You could have become a rock, but instead you are a person who can contemplate your own existence. When you want to make your hand into a fist, your hand turns into a fist, and you caused that to happen. Start understanding how wonderful the fact that you can read this sentence is, or experience emotions, or even have ability to desire things.

I can't remember how many times I have had this same thought and I totally agree with you. I am trying to be more grateful everyday and to just spend time reflecting on what truly matters. There has to be a balance of course, everyone has to work and do things they don't like to do, but everyone has something that makes them really happy. We should spend as much time figuring that out as we do on our day job. Why don't we think about our lives more and how to become happier every day? I want to spend as much time trying to answer this question as I did recruiting / working and it is already yielding some results. I made my first post on this site and it feels good to get some things off your chest. :)

Love the last one. I think the happiest moments in my life all correlate to the people I was with. I've gone on some really exotic trips, but they would have all been meaningless without the people I was with. Conversely, I have had some really good times with no money and nothing to do. Some of my fondest memories involve aimlessly driving around with my best friends looking for anything to kill time

In high school, I won Florida relays (a big track and field meet) as a significant underdog. It was like something from a movie and is what got me into college. Calling my parents and family after that was so fun.
