Harvard Sophomore Nepo Burned (Older folks have advice?)

Got a 4.0 relevant experience partner connects but wheres that threshold of there is no saving you get the fck out bro. My hirevues shit the bed > good content and normal but stumbled around like I had cerebralpalsy.

Can someone whos actually in IB shine some light on how or who these campus recruiting teams are and how they go through the hirevues and weigh parts of application thx

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about how campus recruiting teams evaluate HireVue interviews and applications:

  1. HireVue's Role in the Process:
HireVue interviews are often used as an initial screening tool. While they are important, they are not the sole determinant of your candidacy. Recruiters typically use them to assess:

    • Communication skills: Clarity, confidence, and structure in your responses.
    • Behavioral fit: How well you align with the firm's culture and values.
    • Technical knowledge: For some roles, they may include technical questions to gauge your understanding of the field.
  2. How Recruiters Weigh Applications:
Campus recruiting teams look at your application holistically. Here's how they typically prioritize:

    • Academic Performance: A 4.0 GPA is a strong signal of your intellectual capability and work ethic.
    • Relevant Experience: Internships, leadership roles, and extracurriculars that demonstrate your interest and skills in finance are key.
    • Networking: Partner connections and referrals can significantly boost your chances, as they often push your application to the top of the pile.
    • HireVue Performance: While a poor HireVue performance can hurt, it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker if other parts of your application are strong.
  3. Threshold for "No Saving You":
If your HireVue performance was truly subpar (e.g., incoherent answers, lack of preparation, or failure to address the questions), it might raise red flags. However, if your content was solid but delivery was shaky, you might still have a chance. Recruiters understand that nerves can play a role, especially for younger candidates.

  4. Advice for Moving Forward:

    • Practice Makes Perfect: Use HireVue's unlimited practice feature to get comfortable with the format. Record yourself answering common behavioral and technical questions.
    • Leverage Your Network: If you have strong connections, reach out to them. A recommendation from a partner or senior banker can sometimes override a less-than-stellar HireVue.
    • Follow Up: If you don’t hear back, consider sending a polite follow-up email to express your continued interest in the role.
    • Learn and Adapt: If this cycle doesn’t work out, focus on improving your interview skills and building more experience for the next round.

Remember, even the best candidates stumble sometimes. The key is to learn from the experience and come back stronger. Good luck!
