HBS IB recruiting

How is HBS with regards to investment banking recruiting? I know not many people recruit for IB at HBS, but are there ample resources if one wants to solely focus on recruiting for IB? Is HBS at par with Wharton, Columbia for example? Will appreciate posts from someone who has personal experience.

Harvard Business School (HBS) is undoubtedly a strong platform for investment banking (IB) recruiting, but it is important to note that the dynamics differ compared to schools like Wharton or Columbia. Here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Recruiting Focus: While HBS is a powerhouse for buy-side roles (Private Equity and Venture Capital), IB recruiting is less of a focus for the student body. However, this does not mean that resources for IB recruiting are lacking. HBS provides ample resources for those who want to pursue IB, including networking opportunities, career services, and access to alumni in top IB roles.

  2. Comparison with Wharton and Columbia:

    • Wharton: Wharton is often considered the strongest school for finance and IB recruiting. It has a more structured pipeline for IB roles, with a significant number of students targeting and securing positions in top investment banks.
    • Columbia: Columbia also has a strong presence in IB recruiting, particularly due to its location in New York City, which facilitates networking and access to Wall Street firms.
    • HBS: While HBS is not as IB-focused as Wharton or Columbia, it still offers a robust network and resources. The difference lies in the concentration of students targeting IB, which is lower at HBS compared to Wharton or Columbia.
  3. Alumni Network and Brand Value: HBS has a globally recognized brand and a vast alumni network, which can be leveraged for IB recruiting. However, the informal recruiting processes and networking opportunities at HBS are more tailored towards buy-side roles rather than IB.

  4. Key Takeaway: If your sole focus is IB, Wharton might provide a more direct and structured path. However, HBS still offers strong opportunities for IB recruiting, especially if you take the initiative to network and utilize the available resources.

In summary, HBS is a solid choice for IB recruiting, but it may require more self-driven effort compared to Wharton or Columbia, where IB recruiting is more ingrained in the student culture and career services.
