When does health insurance for firms generally start? I've told I have to wait over a month before benefits kick in - I thought they should start on the first day.

I believe it’s retroactive to your start date. So although coverage doesn’t start until 1 month after start date, it’s retroactive so any expenses will be reimbursed / covered by insurance once coverage starts and you submit claim. At least that’s the case at my firm !
