HELP!! Comeback after being Fired?
Hi All,
Was let go as a third year analyst. HR initially said it was RIF but reported it as a performance issue to FINRA. Deal team members had positive feedback, performance reviews were good and was told I was doing well. Not sure why they s*rewed me. Honestly I’m confused and a bit lost at this point.
Confident of my skills but fear that the doors are shut for recruiting in IB now. Don’t mind starting against as a senior analyst but want to get back in.
Not sure how to go ahead now but certain that I want to get back into banking for the foreseeable future atleast Any advice would be appreciated
Sorry to hear this happened, it sucks to hear what you're going through. To be honest, I would reach out to HR about the FINRA rationale and see if they can amend it if possible. I'd imagine this could cause trouble down the road, as it relates to your "story" (i.e., controlling the narrative as to what happened and why you left the firm) when you begin interviewing again.
Regarding getting back into banking - I'd imagine you will still be able to get a few shots on goal with a well-crafted story. For reference, I resigned from my previous role a few months back after I made a bad lateral move (i.e., joined a group that was not the right cultural fit). I've been able to land a few interviews which has been reassuring. Hoping the hiring market picks up more heading into bonus season.
Got it. I would say really focus on crafting the right story then around your departure. The question about "what happened" will always come up when you interview so just be prepared to address that head on. As a previous reply stated, I would try and dispute what was put on your U-5 and get that changed/removed because I'd imagine that would complicate things a bit.
Are we talking about a U-5? This is something you should speak to a legal adviser about. Some of these dismissals have a process to dispute the language of a U-5 or enter into some type of mediation or arbitration. Consider negotiating the language used in your FINRA disclosure to minimize the impact. Not amend, but altogether changed or removed.
Please note I probably haven't emphasized this properly, this is a serious matter. At the very least your firm might not want to bother with fighting you on this and you can get a better outcome. Best outcome is for them to just part ways with you amicably (unless it is something including illicit or dangerous behavior). Hopefully things work out well.
