Help communicating feedback to analysts
IB Sr Associate going for VP promote. I came from working at several places in industry (after starting in banking) where the team was basically me, maybe a Director/VP, and the CFO. Things were very harsh and transparent up and down the chain, but ultimately made us better performers as a result.
Coming back into banking now and dealing more with our junior resources, I feel the analysts are quite coddled/protected. Every time I offer feedback that isn’t more or less blowing smoke up their ass, I hear it from the deal leads that they’re complaining about me, I’m being hostile, etc.
Any tips on (1) how to give negative feedback that sticks (I.e., won’t just be brushed aside) and (2) how to message / communicate better in general?
Anyone else struggle with this?
Smack their butts and ask them to call you EBITDaddy…
do you tell them to "let you know of any questions" before they send you fucked up books and output?
I've worked with a few Gen Z analysts that were deathly afraid to admit they did not know something.
Hard to break the cycle where they send shit work and don't want to deal with the feedback instead of getting it right the first time.
Completely agree, need to start by establishing that can ask for help/clarification on things.
