Help needed: current SA
Will keep it short: summer analyst at pretty sweaty west coast boutique in coverage, just started my junior summer stint
I am the only one in my group (6 or so interns) who was paired with an analyst who isn't really on a live deal, and I have spent the greater part of my time going through old models with very little tasks. I feel pretty angry that the other interns are doing things - what would you do in this situation?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you can do to turn this situation around:
Take Initiative: Use your downtime wisely. Dive into old models, comps, and presentations to sharpen your technical skills. This will not only prepare you for future tasks but also demonstrate your eagerness to learn.
Communicate with Your Analyst: Politely ask your analyst if there are any tasks or projects you can assist with. Frame it as wanting to contribute more and gain hands-on experience.
Network Within Your Group: Reach out to other analysts or associates in your group. Let them know you’re available to help with any tasks. This can open up opportunities to get involved in live deals or other meaningful work.
Stay Visible and Available: Even if you don’t have much to do, stay in the office and be ready to jump in when needed. As highlighted in WSO threads, being present and available goes a long way in banking. People remember when you leave early, not when you stay late.
Collaborate with Fellow Interns: If your peers are working on live deals, ask if they need help with anything. This can help you gain exposure to live deal work and build camaraderie.
Propose Value-Add Projects: If you’ve received positive feedback on your work so far, consider identifying areas where you can add value. For example, you could suggest optimizing a process or creating a resource that could benefit the team.
Maintain a Positive Attitude: It’s easy to feel frustrated, but staying positive and proactive will leave a better impression on your team. Remember, internships are as much about attitude and adaptability as they are about technical skills.
By taking these steps, you can make the most of your internship and position yourself for a strong return offer. Good luck!
