How dead am I?

So I've applied at about 50 different places for a summer analyst position.

I've also reached out to alumni at several of these places to get a feel for how to best position myself for an interview, and most have told me that their HR departments will sort the resumes received from students at my school and deliver them to my school's alums.

I go to a semi-target, have a high GPA and SAT and have had investment banking experience as a summer analyst.

At this point, if I've not even gotten a call back for a phone interview, though, am I screwed? It seems like many guys here are already attending superdays and/or pondering offers.

I don't want to sound like a pretentious douchebag here, but I know my profile is better than or at least rivals a large percentage of applicants who have either interviewed or received an offer. What gives?

Finally, is there anything blatantly wrong in either my profile or in my networking approach that any of you feel I can work on in the next couple of weeks to hopefully get someone to call me back?

The timeline is both encouraging and discouraging for me.

I applied to most of the places less than a couple of weeks ago, and I applied to some in the last few days.

As I certainly didn't miss any deadlines, there's a chance I've just not given the HR departments enough time to judge whether or not I'll get a call back.

On the other hand, I may have applied to some of these places too late to get considered.

Thoughts?

 

I have some bank deadlines in February. You are probably fine just wait a month before you worry.

I'm assuming you attend either Emory, Vandy, or Rice.

 

I'll echo what Drexel said. Most banks continue to collect resumes through January and won't start kicking off their recruiting until later on in the process. Also, a lot of banks are experiencing an uptick in deal flow and have been stretched extremely thin in recent months. If they don't have a dedicated HR group, recruiting has likely taken a backseat.

Dude, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Many of my friends are still submitting their applications through late Jan till early Feb. I, too, was surprised at how some ppl are already getting lots of phone interviews in this WSO board, though.

madgamesI know who you are too. Keep your head up, its a tough year especially coming from a non-target.

You gotta know your technicals more than ever this year and be able to really speak to your resume.

Also, what technicals would you suggest I review?

I'm pretty solid on accounting, share dilution, comparable valuation, precedent transaction valuation, DCF valuation, FCF, WACC, alternative valuation methods, valuation multiples, the basic merger model and finally on my deal experience.

Do I need to get really good with the merger and LBO models or is that something I'll really only be expected to know as I apply to full-time positions?
