How do I effectively "follow up" or maintain my networking relationships?
I am a freshman at a weak semi-target pursuing IB. So I have around 15 people I have either talked to on the phone or met in person. Now the thing is, I have no idea how to maintain these relationships when recruiting time comes. I know people have said things like "Email them an article" or stuff like that, but honestly is that even effective? I definitely want to reach out to these people again and keep in touch but I am not sure how. If I ask to meet in person or ask for another phone call, what can I discuss? My first conversation with them has already been about IB, why they chose it, what they do day to day , etc.
Ideally you want to be making strides in your professional development.
Every 4 months or so send a quick note letting them know something that you’ve accomplished or are working on.
- Placed top bracket in this finance competition
- Was invited to this event for this bank
- Voted to a leadership position within my school’s finance club
- Since we last spoke I’ve talked to X, Y, and Z people at this bank
- Refer back to a topic you spoke about in your previous conversation
If after 4 months you really haven’t accomplished anything worth emailing about then you’re not looking like an attractive candidate.

May want to bump them with new year/Christmas wishes or congratulate them when they did a big deal and discuss the deal.
Yeah ... Don't send in shitty articles you talked about in your intro finance class that your professor talked about because it directly relates to what you learned about that day. Get an internship that actually has you make reports may be a local real estate firm (I know there is one in my town that gets a lot of students to write reports on the housing market and my city doesn't have a lot of other great options), or on your own start creating your own ER reports. Send these in every now or then and this will show learning.
Personally, I wouldn't mention who else you are talking to. AKA other Banks events and what not. I personally hate it when some kids think that a sophomore recruiting event means they know everything now.
IMO. The best way is to just reach out to your connections like they are friends. Go grab a coffee once a semester. Or ask if you can see a copy of a model or CIM they are working on. One this will get you great material that is great for a case study if you get one in the future as well as be a springboard for talking about them and the industry. This is what worked for me.
As a freshman. Sign up for some excel modeling course, start or keep reading some good books on Business, and Drink some beer. You'll be fine you are young. Just don't be a dick and you'll go far.

Keep them up to date with things you've accomplished, or that are new
Ask them if this world event (or whatever) had an affect on there operations here or there.
I'm halfway through under grad need some tips on having a reason to keep the connection going i.e. topics for new conversation.
