How do you deal with assholes?

Just started my internship, and holy shit it feels like most people are the stereotypical frat bro, private school, entitled douchebag asshole. How do you all deal with this?

Is this common, should I expect this, do people mellow out? It feels like everyone is just trying to network and be top dog…honestly I wish people would take it easy. Honestly pretty sad since I’m an introvert and it’s tough for me to connect with these people

Yeah relatable. I’m an extrovert, but I’m at a non target that has very chill people (even those who pursue IB). It’s hard getting used to the fact that everyone in this industry is already intense to begin with, and very common you’ll meet entitled people/assholes. It’ll get better tho. For me, I just really ask questions about their backgrounds and let them talk. It’s easier to hold a convo that way.

There was a Director on the trading desk I worked on during my summer internship back in the day.

For whatever reason, he hated me but loved my friend, who came from the same uni and had the same background I did.

I wasn't offered a role on that desk and ended up not returning to that bank.

But I still remember that guy's name and keep tabs on where he's currently working.

One day I will destroy him and everything he holds dear.

I can't speak to how people's lives get destroyed in S&T, but in IB this can sort itself out.

Story time:

I had a tumultuous exit from my analyst stint due to personal reasons. Had a number of allies leave the group and ended up getting well and truly fucked with my bonus. The person who delivered this message, a director, gloated extensively and essentially said that I would never achieve anything of note because I was exiting large cap M&A to LMM PE. My plan was to follow this person's career and look for opportunities to fuck them over at any turn (heady stuff for an associate-1 at a smaller fund).

Cut to a couple of years later, this person was fired due to increasingly erratic personal behavior. They're getting sued for back rent at a NYC apartment and have not been able to hold down a job. As rare as it may seem, karma tends to catch up to people-- this is just an example of it happening to be more visible.
