How easy is it to transition from West Coast to East Coast internally in IB? Do certain shops allow for internal transfers more?
I was wondering how common it was to transfer internally in a bank from a West Coast office (SF/Bay Area) to an East Coast one (likely NY), as well as how easy it was? Obviously various shops will have different policies but I will be applying for full time positions next year and so a bank that would allow me to transfer is a key priority of mine. As another question, how rapidly can a transfer be done? The reasons for these questions are my gf is applying to law school in a year and a half and she wants to go East Coast, so I would hate to be stuck out west
Thanks yall, any experience in internal transfers would help. I am group/product agnostic so location is all that would matter. Any banks really free on this topic?
I was at a RBC info session and they kept talking about how much mobility there is internally. The info session was in Vancouver Canada, and apparently it’s possible to move from Canada to USA and also possible to move within Canada and within USA.
In terms of transitioning offices, it's hardest to go from a regional office to the NY office because it is assumed that most people want to be in NY, usually the HQ of the bank/the city where everything happens.
That being said, if you are a good performer and the opportunity arises, it is definitely possible. Just know that you don't want to make it seem like you are trying to go to the NY office and you were using the regional office as a stepping stone. Many regional offices look for people who are actually interested in living/working in the region and not just trying to find any way they can to move to the NY office. This is why at almost any regional office interview, you will get the question of why you want to be in that city. People will be viewed negatively if the team in the regional office believes they are trying to move to NY any chance they get. A valid reason like you described in your OP does make sense though and I think people would understand that but just be aware that you aren't the only one wanting to move to NY from a regional office.
Interesting. I feel like it's hardest to go from the NY office to a regional office by far, because regional offices have very little headcount and spaces available, whereas NY has a ton of turnover and a lot of room on many different teams at any given year.
That being said, you're 100% correct that we try and weed out any of these people who don't really want to be on the West Coast to avoid being short staffed. We had a full time Analyst in our LA office go A-A and transfer to New York to start as an Associate. That timing is perfectly fine.
