How fucked is the job market right now?

There have been hundreds of thousands of white collar workers that have been laid off in a short period of time while firms are freezing hiring or scaling back on hiring. I often see apps on LinkedIn with over 1k applications. I kind of want to leave my current firm but am not getting traction. Can't get interviews or even HR screens (trying to leave finance).

It's tricky in most key industries. A good chunk of my network is currently unemployed (would estimate 20%?). The highest number since I started working. It still looks good in some areas of tech, healthcare, research & development, battery/chemistry, and some municipal jobs/admin type.
It surely looks bad in finance and general tech.

Since you are willing to leave finance you might get lucky in an industry with more demand.

I think eFinancialCareers had some survey, they showed numbers for London and they had something like 30K applicants against 9K jobs in finance?! crazy times...

I think things will look a bit better in terms of openings come June - September
