How is Chicago Booth perceived in Canada?
Moved to Canada a year ago for immigration. Not familiar with this space. Got into Booth for MBA and would like to return to Canada after graduation for family reasons. Understand HBS has the strongest brand globally and that MBAs in Canada aren't perceived the same way as a US MBA degree, but just curious how are Booth graduates perceived in canada relative to graduates of Canadian MBA schools (Ivy; Rotman; Schulich whatever that's called, etc). Would love to hear from those who are actually in Canada, which ranks top in the world for CFAs on a per capita basis.
Also, interested in learning how does a top MBA program affect your date-ability profile in Toronto? lmfao.
Women will be all over you when they hear you went to “Booth”
Toronto is a small place, so it’s more about your network. I’m sure people will think it’s great in general. As for dating, man no one will care 😂
Yeah, the dating thing was a joke. But on the booth mba, is it considered prestigious by the Canadian corp workforce? Like let me give u a basic example, if I told anyone in Canada, I went to Harvard for MBA, that would elicit a "this guy's smart". How would you break down the perception of m7s in Toronto? genuinely curious because I don't know this. If this was US or UK, I wouldn't have asked this question. But Canadians appear to have a mind of their own
Honestly depends on the person. Some might not know anything about the US while others will recognize it's prestige.
I would say most people do not know about the US though
I’d say it’s a nice to have, but again network in Toronto is most important. I’d also ask yourself (unless you’re getting a free ride) if it makes sense to take out a bunch of USD debt just to come back to make CAD and get taxed at a marginal rate of 54% on the high end. You’d have optionality to work in the US for sure which has value too
It will certainly be perceived well by the kinds of people you'd be networking with for the job - it is obviously on another level in terms of reputation compared to the Canadian schools (I went to Ivey). the question is whether it will be enough to overcome the crony cachet of all the local schools there - if the guy hiring you is from the same school, there's a lot of bias.
The Booth name will open doors but network and your prior experience will take you all the way. Network is way way WAY more important here.
Network is being echoed by so many people. Yes, I know maybe 10-12 people in Canada overall. How does one build a network that is actually helpful here? I am not inheriting any relationships from my family.
Same way as everywhere else really. That's where your Booth degree will open doors.
It will help you tremendously in securing initial conversations, and potentially, expanding your network. People will assume you are smart and accomplished when you reach out, so that will help. But nobody will give you a job on a silver platter just because you went to Booth or any other top school for that matter
There aren't many M7 graduates in Canada to begin with, so you will find yourself in somewhat of an exclusive circle that you can utilize. In other words, as a W grad, I can tap not only the W network, but also alumni of other M7s, because there aren't many of us. This would not have been the case in a place like the US, where there is an abundance of M7 grads
Having been in Canada for many years, this might sound harsh (and insulting), there is a drop off between M7 graduates and non-M7 graduates (I am looking at INSEAD, LBS, Oxford/Cambridge/IESE/ESADE and ilk).
Totally agree with this. Many years ago I was an unemployed W undergrad looking for a job in Canada (homeland) after graduating. People were receptive to chats, but there was definitely, sometimes, a sentiment of "Why go to the US? You think you're so smart?" I ended up getting a job back in the US from a random PennLink posting lol, and then in another twist of fate, ended up back in Canada (remote for the same PennLink job). I'm a little disconnected from the local market, but I go to events here and there, and it's just such a small world that's cliquish to local schools as others have described. The Ivy+ happy hours, which sound absurd in the context of US cities, are actually really nice because it's such a small pool of people who ultimately move back and have the same shared experience.
Anyway, all that's to say, network aggressively and early and make it clear that you actively want to be in Canada. And as an aside, so few people know US schools that it won't make any impact on dating lol.
You sound like a typical Indian thinking that degree will get your d*ck wet. I can all resumes with CFA. It is a useless designation which adds no value to your baking career.
