How Much Do First-Year MDs at BB/EB Banks Make?

Saw this article on JPM’s new MD promotions and got curious about comp for first-year MDs at BB/EB banks. Seen threads on MD pay, but nothing specific on new MDs who are still building client books or turning relationships into deals.

These folks are shifting from execution to origination, so their comp might differ from senior MDs with established networks. Anyone have insights on what first-year MDs at BB/EB. Are bonuses heavily tied to deal flow at this stage, or is there a guaranteed minimum for new MDs?

At full service platforms, $800-1mm for first year zipcode.  After that there can be a ramp…but it is wishful thinking that if you crush year two, you’re going to have a double up on comp. Black box will prevail.

lol what - my bank pays that for a mid bucket D3 and it pays pretty much around street.  Director-equivalents at EBs easily clear $1mm

And most directors at EBs will never be successful MDs at EBs bc of how difficult it is to only hit revenue targets on advisory alone

Yup - you only go to EBs as a junior or as someone very senior.  The mid-levels are tempting because of the pay but you should bank on not making MD because it's 2-3x less likely than at a BB

I noticed most of the senior laterals are always from BB to EBs, which makes sense since you are leveraging relationships into deals, but what about the homegrown MDs at EBs? How do they generate revenue without the same full service playbook?

The dirty secret to career success in finance that no one tells you about is the importance of succession.  If you're able to find yourself in a situation where you have an appropriate age gap between you and your MD, but are right behind them in the hierarchy, you end up being the incumbent to take over their book when they retire.  Examining how much room there is to grow and how much competition there is for the spot is very important as a mid-level to senior banker.  You can be great but if you get senior and the MD above you doesn't want to share accounts, you'll get caught in no mans land.  Conversely, if you're only average but end up being the 'incumbent' because you're the most experienced person under a retiring MD, you'll end up becoming the 'guy' by default.  So to answer your question, the EB guys who make MD from analyst are generally a mix of good at their job but with great timing.
