How to actually gain something out of review/PIP session?

Right now I'm seeing two issues from my side:

1) How could you read between the lines regarding those "decent to good" reviews? Are you first on the chopping block in the next layoff wave or pretty much safe?

2) How to ask questions to receive specific feedback that can benefit your development?

Obviously, feedback are never just limited to a 15-min session and you have to read the office every now and then. But wondering how one can make the most of those chat?

I'd go first - I always ask if is there anything I've done that really impressed the senior guys. For one, I know if my work is recognized up the chain but also how am I being perceived.
