How to *APPROPRIATELY* Find Out Why You Didn't Get the Offer?

Just curious what everyone's opinion is on asking why bank X didn't give you an offer after a superday. I think I've read on here before that people only ask for feedback if they think the interview really went terribly, but what if you personally knew someone at the bank (e.g. analyst who was in your fraternity) would you reach out to that guy and ask him if he knew why they didn't extend you an offer?

How are you supposed to figure out what to work on for future interviews without knowing where you messed up? I get that the fit might just not be there, but that can't always be the case.

Thanks.

Telling people why I dinged them is only risk me getting into legal troubles. Same logic applies if they send a go-between like an analyst to ask me.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

I realized this recently. I asked why I didn't get the offer - politely - and got a response to the tune of "it's against HR policy to have contact with rejected candidates." Frustrating, but logical unfortunately.
Maximum effort.

Ya, they'll give you a generic answer, like another candidate was a better fit or more qualified candidate. Then maybe throw in some comment like good luck with future interviews.

To provide a contrarian view, if you get along really well with the analyst you're talking about you may get a real answer about why you weren't picked - I was rejected after a superday for one position and I reached out to an interviewer who I didn't know personally before then but got along really well with, and he told me exactly why I didn't get the spot - but like in the scenario listed above, I was the second choice so maybe that has something to do with it and they really won't say anything after a superday in general.

Ask your friends or networking contacts to mock interview you and get feedback that way. Most times you get dinged for reasons outside your control. If you've prepped well and execute don't second guess yourself.
