How to contact MD?

MD at a notable MM IB was both an athlete/alumni at my school (non-target), and is the only MD that I'm aware of in banking from my school. I'm also an athlete (on a different team) and plan on leveraging this when I contact him. Any advice on how to reach out?

To effectively reach out to the MD, here's a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Craft a Short and Sweet Cold Email:

    • Keep your email concise and professional. MDs are busy and don't have time for lengthy messages.
    • Mention your shared connection (school and athletic background) to establish rapport. For example:

Subject: Fellow [School Name] Athlete Interested in Banking Hi [MD's Name], I hope this email finds you well. My name is [Your Name], and I’m currently a [Year] at [School Name], where I’m part of the [Your Team Name] team. I noticed that you’re an alumnus and were also an athlete during your time here, which I find incredibly inspiring as I pursue a career in investment banking. I’d greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn from your experiences and any advice you might have for someone looking to break into the industry. Please let me know if you’d be open to a quick call or meeting at your convenience. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, [Your Name] [Your Contact Information]
  2. Test Your Email Template:

    • Before sending it to the MD, test your email by sending it to a couple of analysts or associates to ensure it’s polished and professional. Consider asking someone with strong writing skills to review it.
  3. Be Humble and Confident:

    • During any call or meeting, exude humble confidence. Be interesting, but avoid coming across as arrogant or overly rehearsed.
  4. Prepare for the Conversation:

    • Research the MD’s background and career path to tailor your questions. Avoid irrelevant or overly technical questions that don’t align with their expertise.
    • Have a cheat sheet with key points or questions to ensure you stay on track during the conversation.
  5. Follow Up Strategically:

    • After the initial interaction, send a thank-you email and maintain periodic contact (e.g., every 3 months) to keep the relationship fresh. Share updates on your progress or ask for further advice.

By leveraging your shared background and following these steps, you’ll increase your chances of building a meaningful connection with the MD.
